Section Manager - Engineering

National Blue Chip concern and leader in the automotive manufacturing industry requires a qualified and exprienced engineer to join their team as a Section Manager.

Responsibilities include:
Productivity
Developing systems to achieve the most effective methods of producing the product within the parameters of the working specifications.
Monitoring the output/man-hour levels from each area within the division by shift. Investigating abnormalities, missed goals and developing plans to correct.
Developing plans in conjunction with the Shift Supervisors and Engineering to improve methods and output efficiencies.
Liaising with service divisions on improvements on machines or process to increase productivity.
Monitoring man minutes in division, comparing to budget and investigating deficiencies for action to improve.
Reporting deviations to Manufacturing Manager with actions to improve and correct.

Equipment knowledge and awareness
Learning first hand all capabilities and idiosyncrasies of equipment in area through manuals and hands on training.
Developing systems for equipment capabilities and limitations through learning, experience manuals and I.E. Standards
Developing systems for equipment functioning and improvement
Recommend any upgrades or machine changes for product or productivity improvements
Ensure all GPR/MDR that are mandatory or that will assist the process improve equipment and efficiencies are implemented

Meeting production schedules and efficiency levels on a 24 hour basis
Ensure the acceptance of responsibility by the Shift Supervisors by shift for meeting of allotted schedules, with the prescribed manning
Ensure the respective Shift Supervisors have the necessary plans developed to achieve all schedules
Holding Shift Supervisors responsible and accountable for meeting of schedules and handling those not meeting standards and requirements

Ensure problems encountered in the designated production areas are solved expeditiously
Developing necessary systems to overcome all problems encountered and to ensure the smooth running of the area to specification
Calling appropriate disciplines from the service departments to assist in solving problems
Ensuring Shift Supervisors are aware of all forms of assistance available and the use of resources
Following up once problem is solved, to redevelop systems to prevent reoccurrence, with permanent fixes
Ensure there is proper liaison between Shift Supervisors, Service Departments and Manufacturing Manager, relating to problems encountered and action plans and solutions available.

Ensure that Shift Supervisors and employees have necessary guidance and training to carry out their jobs
Give guidance and assistance on all issues to achieve the schedules
Ensure OBT manuals are written up and signed off for all jobs in his area
Ensure that all employees are trained and signed off on OBT by respective Shift Supervisors

Manages divisions to perform within waste goals
Monitoring daily the waste created within the designated division.
Developing action plans to solve problems and stop the creation of waste
Auctioning the plans in conjunction with the Shift Supervisors and Service departments
Monitor results to ensure indicator goals are met within the Business Plan levels

Systems Development and Implementation
Assuming the role of “fixer” in assigned areas, and developing systems for a permanent fix
Design and implement systems which improve performance indicators
Designing systems which improve productivity
Designing systems on procedures and processes, within all working specification parameters, to improve the product and workflow.
Ensuring all methods and standards are covered by systems
Ensuring all systems are being implemented by Shift Supervisors and employees reporting to them.
Ensuring awareness of all systems within the respective Areas

Maintain, plans and control costs in Area
Control expenditures on necessities and not “nice to haves”
Keeping tally on projected purchases for preventative and breakdown maintenances
Preparing annual budgets for area
Inputs the Business Plan via Performance Assessment Planners and Budgets. Ensure these

Ensure machines are maintained on a regular preventative maintenance Schedule
Working in conjunction with Production Control and MMIS planner to set up viable and realistic schedules
Ensuring the parts are available ahead of time through the Engineer and Zone Engineer and Charge hands.
Holding the Engineer responsible to ensure the work is done within the specified, stipulated time and the machine operates as it was designed to do without further problems

Ensure that any piece of equipment that breaks down is correctly prioritized for repair and minim delay
Swiftly organise personnel to handle breakdown
Contacting Engineer and Zone Engineer to assist and correct.
Eliciting help from the Manufacturing Manager and Plant Engineer if problem cannot be solved successfully within a reasonable time
Ensure that job-cards are raised by area operators and shift supervisors and that permits are approved at the correct level. Work permits for vessel entry, hot-work and elevated work may only be approved by section manager.

Ensure there are systems, control and awareness of all Safety and environmental systems are enforced in area
Making sure all Shift Supervisors do the required safety and environmental talks which area monitored and audited to meet the required standards.
Having all Shift Supervisors do unsafe act surveys and planned job observations on a regular basis
Ensuring all accidents are fully investigated and all necessary measures taken to prevent reoccurrence
Ensuring that all safety checks are carried out by Shift Supervisors and their shifts signed off

Process Control
Ensure that all process are adhered to as per work instructions, technical drawings, technical specifications and maintain sound production practices which impact on the ability to control processes.
Ensure that when a process is suspect or deviating from the accepted norm, corrective action is instituted which in includes raising Process Deviation Requests, FMEA or any system designed to ensure correction of the process

Ensure all internal and external quality standards and customer requirements are continuously met
Ensure that when product quality deviates from the requirements that all quality systems procedures are followed, which include amongst others quarantine, hold areas, rework criteria, scrap disposal, Deviation Requests, Corrective/ Preventative Action Requests, etc.
Ensure that all chemical and electrical reports from internal and external laboratories are read, understood and acted upon in conjunction with those service departments(Laboratory, Product Development, Process Engineering
Ensure that field performance data as produced by company systems is read, understood and acted upon in conjunction with service departments (Marketing, Product Development and Quality Assurance)

Minimum requirements
3 year Tertiary Qualification / Degree or diploma – Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Automotive Engineering or Production Management
At least 5 years experience with at least 2 years in a managerial position.
